Egypt Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Transport to prepare tender documents to license 4 companies, each to operate 500 taxis, within Greater Cairo, as the core of the earlier announced Cairo Modern Taxi Fleet, to be environment friendly and compatible to international tourist standards. Documents will specify required specifications, year models, used air conditioning, meters (also hopefully bilingual driver, trained to use districts maps). No mention was given regarding equipping the fleet with mobile or wireless telephones. The (L.E. 150 - 200 million +) scheme will be supervised and controlled by a new agency to be formed within the Ministry of Transport with main branches covering Greater Cairo Zone. To which extent the scheme would attract local producers/ assemblers such as GME, Daewo, and Hyundai among others that remain to be seen. So far no mention was given to financing or to future status of existing Limousine/ Cars Rental companies. |
